Advertising Clip Analysis

Central Characters -

Bruce Willis : Bruce Willis is shown as the dominant character as he is a celebrity and often seen as the tough character in films, this is conveyed in the advert as he is basically giving orders to the people around him.

Main Office Man : This character has been overshadowed by Bruce Willis and is being told what to do.

Main Office Women : The women instantly falls for Bruce Willis because of his celebrity status and at the end of the advert follows him out.

Genre Assignment

Genre - Genres basically show you the category that something is a part of, for example James Bond would often be put into an "Action" genre as there is a lot of action in the film.

Iconography - What the item (Film, book, painting) is related to or is showing, for example a picture of a rock star is iconic because it relates to rock and pieces of history.

Sub - genre - Other genres that something may be associated with or a part of but not necessarily the most obvious genre.

Hybrid Genre - Combination of two or more categories.

Hellboy II : The Golden Army

Genre : Action

Could also be categorised under adventure or fantasy.

The film could have the sub genres adventure or fantasy because the film is not set in a realistic world, often the characters venture into new places as they discover new things, a few of the characters in the film are not human, they are elves or other creatures, one reason why this film should also be put into fantasy.

Setting : The film is set in a fantasy version of modern day Earth, most of the world is controlled by the humans but underground and in hiding around the world there are many creatures which the humans have long forgotten existed.

Iconography : The film shows clear fantasy themes and you can identify the Human world as being similar to ours.

Mood : The film is mostly for older children so the theme is not too dark however it is clear that the good characters are in danger as is the world that they live in.

James Bond : Quantum Of Solace

Genre : Action

Could also be categorised under adventure and crime.

The film could have the sub genres of adventure and crime because James Bond travels across the globe on his mission to stop the villains in the film and these villains are involved with/ leading crime on a large scale.

Setting : Most of the film is set in Bolivia, a very dusty and potentially hostile environment.

Iconography : This film is incredibly iconic simply because it is a Bond film, like the other Bond films, it follows a recipe to make sure it doesn't loose it's iconography.

Mood : The film has a serious mood but it is not too dark as this would ruin the Bond iconography.

Genre : Action

Could also be categorised under fantasy and history.

The film could have the sub genre fantasy because a large amount of the film is over the top and unrealistic however it could still be under the history genre because this was an event that took place in history, although a lot of what actually happened has been changed in the film.

Setting : 480 B.C - Thermopylae

Iconography : This film is based on the historic battle at Thermopylae, the armour and weapons that the Spartans have are iconic items from history.

Mood : The film has a dark mood, the film is almost all about war.

Film Language Definitions -

As I do game development I have used the software that I often use to produce my own examples of the following definitions:

(I have also used examples from www.stevebirkin.com)

Mise En Scene - Mise En Scene is looking at the visual aspects of the film irrespective of the films narrative.

(I have no example for this definition as it is hard to make an example for in a short space of time)

Establishing Shot - This shot establishes the context for a scene by showing the relationship between important figures and objects.

Long Shot - Shows the whole human figure or object and often is used to place them in some relation to their  surroundings.

Mid Shot - Similar to a Long Shot but from not as far away.

Close-Up - Camera shot which is very close to the target.

Point Of View Shot - Similar to first person, you see things from the characters point of view.

High Angle Shot - The shot will look down onto the target.

Low Angle Shot - Looking upwards to the target.

Media Homework - "The Image"

This image depicts the actor Josh Hartnett in what looks to be a very expensive suit, surrounded by what look to be security guards trying to stop his fans from throwing themselves onto him. The way the people surrounding him are grasping hold of him shows that they want to stay with him. Basically this image has been designed to advertise, it tries to make every man want to be this man, you can see that he is very popular and  has no problem with the ladies (Looking to the right-hand side of the picture.)

It makes sense for the company to call their product "Diamonds For Men" as a good majority of people associate diamonds with fame, success and money! Three things which many men want in their lives, the advert is trying to force you into believing that this product can bring you all of these things; it is something that has to be bought by any man.

As for the colours and lighting in the picture, the colours only really range from different tints as all colour has been removed from the image, this gives the picture a smooth; cool look, similar to how Apple make all of their Iphones shiny and black because people see it as being cool. Much of the light is focused on Josh Hartnett, as the advert wants to make him the centre of attention. Others around him are also lit up but the people gradually fade out into the distance, the more important people in the photo which the company wants you to see are more lit up than others.
