Film Language Definitions -

As I do game development I have used the software that I often use to produce my own examples of the following definitions:

(I have also used examples from www.stevebirkin.com)

Mise En Scene - Mise En Scene is looking at the visual aspects of the film irrespective of the films narrative.

(I have no example for this definition as it is hard to make an example for in a short space of time)

Establishing Shot - This shot establishes the context for a scene by showing the relationship between important figures and objects.

Long Shot - Shows the whole human figure or object and often is used to place them in some relation to their  surroundings.

Mid Shot - Similar to a Long Shot but from not as far away.

Close-Up - Camera shot which is very close to the target.

Point Of View Shot - Similar to first person, you see things from the characters point of view.

High Angle Shot - The shot will look down onto the target.

Low Angle Shot - Looking upwards to the target.

Media Homework - "The Image"

This image depicts the actor Josh Hartnett in what looks to be a very expensive suit, surrounded by what look to be security guards trying to stop his fans from throwing themselves onto him. The way the people surrounding him are grasping hold of him shows that they want to stay with him. Basically this image has been designed to advertise, it tries to make every man want to be this man, you can see that he is very popular and  has no problem with the ladies (Looking to the right-hand side of the picture.)

It makes sense for the company to call their product "Diamonds For Men" as a good majority of people associate diamonds with fame, success and money! Three things which many men want in their lives, the advert is trying to force you into believing that this product can bring you all of these things; it is something that has to be bought by any man.

As for the colours and lighting in the picture, the colours only really range from different tints as all colour has been removed from the image, this gives the picture a smooth; cool look, similar to how Apple make all of their Iphones shiny and black because people see it as being cool. Much of the light is focused on Josh Hartnett, as the advert wants to make him the centre of attention. Others around him are also lit up but the people gradually fade out into the distance, the more important people in the photo which the company wants you to see are more lit up than others.
